Overview
Old Brunswick County Jail Museum, located on the corners of Nash & Rhett Streets in Southport, is open for the summer season. The docents will offer free tours detailing the jail's history as visitors view original jail cells and other exhibits. The historic prison is one of the stops on the Walking Tour of Southport. Self-guided tours are available when the museum is open, from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. each Wednesday and Saturday from April - October and Friday afternoons in July and August. The jail has two cells and a runabout on the second floor. Each cell was designed with four bunks, a commode and a wash basin. The cells are constructed of flat iron bars riveted together. Still visible upstairs is graffiti drawn by prisoners.
